Spine of the Sky

A thin veil of atmospheric moisture pours like a slow-motion wave over the razor-sharp saddle of an alpine crest, spilling into the deep glacial ravines below. Clinging tenaciously to the exposed, wind-scoured soil, vibrant clusters of alpine bearberry (Arctostaphylos alpina) paint the slopes in a striking patchwork of crimson and gold, intermingled with hardy tufts of sedge and stunted balsam fir krummholz. This fragile, high-altitude tundra ecosystem endures some of the most volatile weather conditions in North America, acting as an isolated northern outpost where cold-adapted plant communities thrive amidst fractured granite and relentless mountain winds.
