Sanctuary in the Bark

Tucked deep within the protective, muscular folds of an old-growth conifer, an adult mountain lion (Puma concolor) watches the winter woods of Yosemite National Park with calm, calculating intensity. The big cat finds a temporary den among the heavily textured, amber-hued bark of the massive tree trunk, using the natural hollow to break the bitter chill of the Sierra Nevada snow. Framed intimately by frosted branches and scattered winter debris, its dense, grey-brown coat provides the ultimate camouflage against the forest floor, allowing this solitary apex predator to vanish at will. As an essential keeper of balance across California's high country, this secretive hunter embodies the fragile, enduring wildness that persists beneath the park's iconic granite peaks.
