Eye to Eye with the Cloud Hunters
Peering over a moss-slicked ridge in the Ethiopian highlands, a tight-knit family of African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) offers an intimate glimpse into the life of Africa’s most formidable social carnivore. The mountain air is heavy and damp, coating the predators' fur with a fine layer of mist as rolling clouds engulf the jagged valleys behind them. Far removed from the arid lowlands where their species typically roams, this alpine clan has masterfully adapted to the steep, treacherous terrain of the cloud forest.
At the center of the frame, an individual rests its chin directly on a weathered rock, its amber eyes locking onto the camera with intense, calm curiosity. Surrounding it, pack members peer forward with matching focus, their characteristically massive, rounded ears perked up to catch the muffled sounds of the mountain valleys. This extreme close-up highlights the deep social bonds and collective curiosity that keep the pack unified. In this unforgiving vertical ecosystem, their survival hinges entirely on this unbroken closeness and flawless coordination.
