Emerging from the rich subterranean soils of the Ohio hillsides after a prolonged seventeen-year developmental cycle, a solitary periodical cicada rests upon a cluster of dew-laden leaves in the cool dampness of a Hocking County canyon. Glistening under the soft, golden filtration of early morning sunlight, the insect's intricate, amber-veined wings stretch wide, readying for flight as its distinctive red compound eyes adjust to the upper canopy. This remarkable mass emergence acts as a powerful ecological pulse across the region's deciduous forests. By flooding the ecosystem in overwhelming numbers, these unique insects employ a biological strategy known as predator satiation, ensuring that enough individuals survive to mate, lay eggs within the tender twigs of the forest, and restart their grand subterranean odyssey beneath the woodland floor.
