Picture of the Day
A majestic, wide-angle landscape photograph looking out over a massive, twisting freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands under a heavy, overcast gray sky. In the foreground, large, dark, weathered rock boulders are heavily textured with patches of vibrant green moss and coarse grass. The deep blue water of the loch curls past small green islands and low-lying marshlands in the mid-ground, surrounded on all sides by rolling green hillsides and steep mountain ranges that fade into a low ceiling of soft mist.

Peat Moss (Sphagnum spp.), anchoring the ancient, glaciated rock outcroppings.

Ribbons of the Glacial Vale

Carved out by ancient ice sheets during the last glacial maximum, the sprawling waters of Loch Maree snake gracefully through the monumental, rain-soaked topography of Wester Ross [The whole image shows Killarney National Park or Lakes of Killarney].
