Crimson in the Canopy

Perched with alert grace upon a sprawling branch of fresh spring growth, a striking male northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) injects a jolt of brilliant scarlet into the muted forest. Surrounded by emerging yellow-green leaves and delicate buds, this iconic songbird stands out in stark contrast against a softly diffused woodland backdrop. As a year-round resident of North America's eastern forests, the male relies on his vivid plumage and loud, clear whistling songs to actively defend his nesting territory and attract a mate during the frantic surge of the spring breeding season.
