Ancient Sires of Stone

**The quiet floor of this temperate coniferous woodland** demonstrates a highly developed micro-ecosystem centered around ancient, glacially deposited granitic boulders. These dense, slow-weathering rock surfaces serve as prime substrates for a complex community of bryophytes, which form thick, moisture-retaining cushions across the rock faces. This continuous, spongy vegetative mat actively intercepts atmospheric moisture and organic debris, trapping nutrients and generating a rich micro-layer of humus over the stone. Supported by a surrounding canopy of tall, straight-trunked evergreens, this damp microclimate maintains low evaporation rates, allowing the specialized mosses and scattered understory ferns to thrive even through extended dry intervals.
