Sentinels of the Southern Shore

Huddled securely on a weathered, lichen-crusted rocky outcrop, the matriarch watches over her fluffy charges as the crisp Southern Ocean wind sweeps across the bay. Safely nestled within their simple pile of dried twigs and coastal debris, the downy gray chicks sit quietly, their dense, dark-tipped bills mimicking the majestic profile of the adult standing guard. In this isolated sanctuary where the forest fringes meet the churning, deep-blue waters, the family waits patiently between the rhythmic arrivals of food brought from long fishing journeys over the open ocean waves.
