Constant wave energy from the expansive lake basin, combined with seasonal freeze-thaw cycles, has systematically undercut the vertical cliff bases along vulnerable joints and bedding planes, carving out a series of recessed sea caves, arches, and pillars. Atop these highly textured, iron-oxidized rock shelves, thin and well-drained soils support a resilient northern temperate forest canopy. The massive adjacent body of water serves as a thermal buffer, regulating localized seasonal microclimates and fostering early-season deciduous growth whose bright green foliage contrasts sharply with the deep reds of the stone and the exceptionally clear, shallow water revealing submerged rocky shelves below.
