Where Pastures Meet Sea
The raw coastal wind carried the unmistakable tang of salt water mixed with wet, fertile earth as we crested the final grassy saddle. Down in the sheltered basin, a small herd of cattle grazed peacefully along a freshwater stream winding lazily out to a hidden, deep-water inlet. The sheer, emerald hillsides dropped violently straight into the ocean, their sharp folds illuminated by a fleeting break in the heavy storm clouds overhead. The water in the bay sat dark and watchful, mirroring the moody, cloud-choked peaks that guard this isolated coastline. Standing there, it felt as though we had stepped into a forgotten corner of the world where the rugged wilderness of the mountains completely refuses to give way to the sea.
How to capture
Capturing the immense scale and dynamic range of a coastal mountain basin requires careful framing and a patient eye on the sky. To balance the bright, sun-kissed green ridges with the deep, moody shadows under the cloud cover, utilize a high-dynamic-range sensor and shoot in RAW format to preserve details in both extremes. Set your tripod on an elevated vantage point using a standard zoom lens at roughly 50mm to 70mm, which prevents wide-angle distortion and maintains the natural, imposing scale of the background peaks. Select an aperture between f/8 and f/11 for absolute edge-to-edge sharpness, and employ a fast shutter speed (at least 1/250s) to crisp up the fine blades of foreground tussock grass blowing in the ocean breeze and to keep the distant grazing livestock perfectly sharp.
